My dog is wheezing, vomiting, struggling to breathe. When to call vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 2 years and 5 months old

Taking care of neighbors sweet dog while they're abroad. She was sent to us from boarders bc she got the flu. Saw a vet yesterday but we weren't there. Been taking antibiotics since last night. She's shivering, has runny eyes, and has been wheezing and throwing up/spitting up water. She "wheezes" loudly before each throw up and her trunk seems to heave a lot like she struggles to breathe. (But chest seems a lot calmer when she calms down.) Can we send a video? What signs would require vet visit?

I’m so sorry to hear about Rooney. If the spitting up is happening after a cough, this could be a terminal retch (they cough so hard they gag/spit up). In this case, I’d call the vet and ask for a cough suppressant to calm the coughing. You can send a video clip to experts@Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.co if you are still worried. Main warning signs for me are difficulty breathing, if the amount or sound of the coughing changes, if Rooney stops eating, or becomes very lethargic. If see a vet pronto if any of those occur. Best of luck to you and Rooney!
