My dog has low blood sugar. Is dextrose in subcutaneous fluids safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 10 years and 4 months old | 13 lbs

I have a great vet, but I wanted a second opinion on his latest advice. I have been giving my dog subcutaneous saline (0.9%) for months. Lately her blood sugar is low and they've added 5% dextrose to the saline (to alternate with regular saline treatments). Google tells me it's not advisable (greater risk of infection, necrosis). But my vet has been doing it for years. I'm worried about her sugar levels but I'm just not sure about putting sugar under her skin! Would appreciate advice.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Maisie! Personally I do not prescribe SQ fluids with dextrose for the reasons you listed. I recommend investigating WHY Maisie's blood sugar is low. If it is less than 60 I would have your Vet send out an insulin/glucose ratio to see if she has an insulinoma (pancreatic tumor) and consider an belly ultrasound. There are other ways to increase blood sugar like small frequent meals. But I highly recommend finding the reason. I wish you and Maisie the best!
