Why is my dog's nose runny and bloody? When should I worry and act?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Staffordshire Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 12 years and 11 months old

My dog has had a really runny nose for the past 2 days, yesterday it was more like a nose blood for around 10 minutes but apart from that there has just been a slight amount of blood. What can cause this and how can we stop her from having a runny nose? she doesn’t seem to be irritated by it either and I believe she’s only sneezed once

Hello, sorry to hear about Cassie. I would recommend having her evaluated by her veterinarian as the bloody discharge is not typical of a common upper respiratory tract infection. Given her age, one potential cause could include something such as a tumor at the back of her nose. Alternatively, this could be something benign such as allergies and inflammation. If so, she may require both allergy medications and antibiotics. In the interim, you can put a cold pack over her nose if she ever does develop another bloody nose. Hope this helps and best of luck.
