My senior dog is circling, flinching, and unresponsive. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rhodesian Ridgeback | Male | neutered | 13 years and 5 months old

Three weeks ago my 13 year old ridgeback cross stopped barking and charging to the front door when the door bell rings. Now he doesn't respond at all. This week he has also started flinching when I go to pat him and walking around the house or yard in circles, walking around and around sometimes for hours. What can be wrong? This is very very unusual behaviour for him.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bundy! I am very worried about a sudden behavior changed and circling in an older dog. I am concerned about a central nervous system (brain) problem like a stroke, brain tumor, dementia/cognitive dysfunction, sudden blindness, or vestibular disease. I highly recommend an exam by your Vet. I wish you and Bundy the very best!
