Why does my dog have a bald spot and red dry skin in her ears?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 2 years and 7 months old | 83 lbs

My dog seems to have a bald spot on her side. No change in diet. Any reason why this could be happening? And how can I stop/fix it? She also has red spots in her ear, but they appear to be dry skin, and don’t seem to bother her.

This is probably caused by an allergic reaction. first of all make sure you de-flea Maddi regularly every month with a high quality spot on (ex. Advantage) as fleas are by far the most common reason for these reactions. If the fleas are not the problem, it could be an allergic reaction to food or an environmental factor. this is more complicated to treat and will sometimes require medications such as Steroids, anti histamines or Apoquel in order to stop the allergy.
