My cat is vomiting, hiding, and pooping outside the box. Vet now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Manx | Male

Hello, my cat is suddenly pooping in odd places, has thrown up, is hiding, doesn't want to move, and irritable. He's indoor only, no change in food or litter. And his litter box is clean. What could be wrong? When should I take him to the vet?

It sounds as Coco is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better.

I recommend to have Frodo examined today. Cats often exhibit illness in ways like sleeping in weird places, not using the litter box or changing behavior (like suddenly being clingy or isolating themselves). I recommend to bring in a fresh stool sample for testing and so the doctor can check the consistency. I hope they figure out the cause quickly.

It sounds like Coco isn't feeling well and this is causing him to act depressed and less energetic. If he has diarrhea he may have a gastrointestinal illness like GI parasites, gastroenteritis, or a food sensitivity causing this change. You can try offering Coco a bland meal of boiled chicken and sweet potato or rice to see if that settles the diarrhea. However, if it does not resolve quickly or any other signs of illness develop like vomiting, inappetance or lethargy it would be a good idea to have him check out by a veterinarian. Please remember to bring a stool sample with you on the visit so your veterinarian can check for parasites. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and I hope Coco is feeling better soon!
