My cat eats dry food too fast and throws up. Should I try wet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 5 years old | 8 lbs

My cat goes through phases of throwing up with dry cat food. We have not changed the brand but have changed the flavors. Should I just feed her wet food? Most of the time she will throw up a roll-like form of her dry food but sometimes it’s just a orange-yellow liquid (that’s not as common though). She has been on Friskies her whole life.

There are a huge number of reasons that a cat will vomit. Since it sounds like Luna is mostly vomiting undigested food, she may simply be eating the dry food too quickly, so canned food is a great idea to try. Canned food is actually more biologically appropriate and better for a cat's health than dry food, so feeding Luna only canned food is a great idea. However, if she continue to vomit while eating canned food only, I would certainly recommend having your veterinarian examine her. Good luck! I hope that was helpful and answered your question. Buddy is adorable! Sometimes cats develop a sensitivity to one food or another and start to vomit after eating it. If he's eating the canned diet just fine and it's a good, high quality balanced diet like Hills, Science Diet, Purina, or Royal Canin, for example, then just keep him on that. If this vomiting becomes a pattern, he needs to see a vet for a full-workup to make sure he doesn't have an obstruction, inflammatory bowel disease, food allergies, or some other issue that needs to be addressed. Hope that helps!
