Hi, I'm looking to take a puppy from a friend that's been diagnosed with 'anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia' i was just looking for some advice on how to care for a dog with this condition as I don't want him to be put to sleep. He is a malamute/Irish wolfhound cross. Thanks

Thanks for using PetCoach! This is a very rare disease that can really only be diagnosed with a genetic blood test and/or biopsy. If he has not had these tests, he will need to do so. If he has been definitively diagnosed, general prognosis in terms of surviving to adulthood is good. BUT - he could be a very expensive dog to keep healthy. Depending on how his disease presents, he could have frequent respiratory infections, chronic dry eye leading to frequent eye infections and possibly requiring frequent, life-long eye drops/ointments, etc. I STRONGLY recommend he set up a relationship with a veterinary dermatologist as soon as possible as you will likely need help from this type of specialist from time to time throughout his life. However, if you are willing to be very on top of veterinary care (and the expense of doing so) Bobby can have a long, happy life. Here are two good articles I found about the disease but you'll still want to ask the dermatologist about the day-to-day care recommendations for a dog with this condition. https://www.pawprintgenetics.com/products/tests/details/50/?breed=165 http://www.vetbook.org/wiki/dog/index.php?title=Ectodermal_dysplasia Best of luck to you and Bobby!
