Why does my dog protect his treats instead of eating them?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 9 years and 6 months old | 7 lbs

I gave my dog a treat last night but instead of eating it he is very protective of it. He keeps it in his mouth or while sleeping he sleeps on it.... Is this normal for dogs to do?

Yes, this is normal behavior. More common in chihuahua type breeds. Sometimes they will bite or nip at you if you try and take their treat away. So if you have small children or other dogs in the same household then it may be best to take his treat away.
