My dog gagged after chewing a raw bone. What should I watch for?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 57 lbs

My dog was chewing on a small raw bone (joint) and suddenly started gagging. She was retching for a while, and spitting out slimy white mucus. I checked her mouth - nothing. I raised her back legs, pressed her belly a few times. After a few mins, she settled down - panting a little, eventually calmed down and went to sleep. she's eating, drinking normally. Added lots of pumpkin to her meals

I am sorry to hear about Xena. I would definitely keep a close eye on her for the next few days and if she has any additional gagging, any vomiting, decreased appetite, change in voice or increased drooling or is pawing at her face, stretching her neck or having trouble breathing she should be seen right away. We do see issues with dogs ingesting bones that can range from bones getting lodged in the throat to causing GI obstruction to splintered bone penetrating the tissues. I personally do not recommend the use of bones for dogs because we see problems too often from giving these as treats.
