Should I take my anxious cat on a trip or leave him with a sitter?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 5 years and 11 months old | 15 lbs

I recently adopted a cat who has very quickly become very emotionally attached to me. He has not left my side since I brought him home. I have an upcoming trip and am worried my cat will be upset from the lack of attention, even with an in-house cat sitter. Should I attempt to bring my cat with me on a two hour flight and ten days away, or should I leave him at home?

I am glad your kitty is bonding so well with you. I would think, however, that a flight and trip in a strange place would be more stressful than staying home without you. You may consider having your pet sitter come over a few times to meet your kitty before your trip. You can also use a Feliway diffuser https://www.feliway.com/us#redirected and a calming supplement like Zylkene http://www.vetoquinolusa.com/content/zylkene or Composure to try to decrease stress while you are away.
