Why does my French Bulldog puppy need pins removed from his leg?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Male | unneutered | 7 months and 1 day old | 11.5 lbs

My 6 month old french bulldog had a fractured tibia. He has pins put in and on cage rest for 4 weeks. The vet now said he has to have another operation to have the pins removed. None of the vets ever said their would be another operation and I presumed, like humans that pins would just be left in. The bill is getting expensive so I’d prefer to avoid it if it isn’t necessary?

If it was his distal tibia that was fractured and the pins are near the growth plate, the pins can sometimes affect the way the bone grows in a young dog and lead to limb deformities with time. If there is concern for this on the x-ray it could be why your vet wants to remove the pins. Sometimes hardware can also break or become infected and require removal. Since your vet knows the details of the case you may want to bring up your concerns with them and they may be able to better explain the reasoning.
