Are over-the-counter flea treatments as effective as vet ones?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 10 years old | 11 lbs

Is it really a good idea to buy flea prevention medication over the counter instead of going through a veterinary clinic?

If possible I recommend products available at your vet's office. These products are usually more effective than over the counter products and have undergone more extensive testing/safety trials. Often your vet's office will also have rebates or coupons available when you purchase the products that will help decrease the cost to you.
