My puppy sits and lays down funny. Could it be hip issues or pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 18 days old | 23 lbs

Hi there. We adopted a 15 week large mix and we have noticed that she sits and lays down funny. When she lays her legs are frogged out to the side but point forward towards her head. The pictures I have found online are dogs with legs pointed back. She also sits with her legs more frogged and at times sits with her tail completely tucked and underneath her. Do you think these are signs of hip problems or is there anything else we should look into? Also any thoughts on JPS

What a cutie she is! Some dogs do lay in funny positions. If she seems to walk normally and has no lameness I wouldn't be concerned by her laying down this way, but if she hasn't been to the vet with you already I would make an appointment for them to look her over and palpate the hips to be safe, and at that time they can get her up to date on vaccines if she isn't already as well as test her for intestinal parasites and deworm her (she looks like she could be underweight based on this photo but it is difficult to say without being able to put our hands on her).
