My 6-month-old kitten is wobbly, falls, and drools. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 5 months and 19 days old

I have a 6 month old kitten that has always been unsteady whilst walking, she can walk and run bit often looses balance, I first put it down to her being weak as she was the smallest from the litter however she hasn’t improved, she is very happy and loving, not in any pain however falls a fair bit and is almost always drooling, the vets in my area have a reputation for euthanising if they’re not sure of the illness so I’m obviously reluctant to take her if she’s not in pain or getting worse

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Kali is adorable! If Kali has been this way since birth she likely has cerebellar hypoplasia which is caused by a viral infection while she was inutero (while her mom was pregnant). It is underdevelopment of the part of the brain that controls coordination and balance. These cats can live full and wonderful lives. They are fun cats! There is no cure though. https://www.petcoach.co/article/cerebellar-hypoplasia-in-kittens/ I hope this helps!
