My dog won't walk on his paw after being outside. When to see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Tibetan Spaniel | Male | neutered | 25 lbs

My dog was outside all day and then when he came inside he won’t walk on his paw at all. He refuses to walk on it and he keeps licking it. I tried to look at it to check it out and he tried to bite me which is very odd for him because he’s never even growled at me in his life time. I’m trying to decide if I should take him to the emergency vet tonight or wait until the morning and call his regular vet.

I’m sorry to hear that Ruxus is so uncomfortable. Insect stings, spider bites, concrete burn to the pads, and injury are all possible causes. If he is that uncomfortable then you may consider having him evaluated by an emergency veterinarian at least to improve his comfort for the night and avoid everyone not sleeping. Otherwise if he calms down or starts walking on it then you could re-evaluate. When dogs are painful their only protection is to bite- but if it is so unusual for him then that indicates how painful he is. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon.
