My cat licks her flea collar while grooming. Is this safe for her?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 3 years and 6 months old

I recently purchased the Pulvex tick and flea collars for my cats. I prefer the collar over the drops because they immediately run out and brush it off in the sand- not good for white cats especially. However, my cat tends to lick her collar while grooming herself. I cut off any excess collar and made a reasonable tightness but she can still reach it. She doesn't seem to be reacting to the collar is terms of skin irritability. Does "pet friendly" mean safe for occasional licks or is it harmful?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. If she is licking the flea and tick collar occasionally, this should be fine. She should not experience any adverse side effects. I do tend to find that the flea / tick collars are not as effective as the oral preventative medications such as Bravecto. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
