Why are both my kittens suddenly limping and one has a fever?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 3 days old

I don't know what happened but both of my kittens seemed to have a sprain on one of their front paws now. The other day until this morning, it was only Bel who has a sprain and is down with a fever. Now Hestia has a sprain too. I'm really confused how the both of them is limping now. Is there anything I can do for them at home without taking them to the vet? It doesn't look too serious seeing that they can still walk but worrying because they are limping a lot.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your kittens. I would recommend that they see their veterinarian as there is a viral infection that is easily spread between kittens. It can cause a fever, limping, oral ulcers as well as upper respiratory signs such as sneezing. It is known as the calicivirus. They may require medication. In the meantime, keep them comfortable, help them move when necessary and encourage them to eat and drink. I hope this information helps!

If all kittens in the litter are being affected I would suspect either something genetic, environmental, nutrition related or some sort of contagious illness affecting them all. Since you have an entire litter affected, it would be best to seek out veterinary care ASAP so that all of the kittens can be examined, tested as needed and treated for any underlying conditions causing their symptoms.
