My dog chewed fiberglass. How to treat skin irritation and itching?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Pyrenees | Female | spayed | 2 years and 11 months old | 112 lbs

I believe my dog has fiberglass dermatitis. She has large red scabs all over and has begun chewing her hair off. We've had the problems for months now, I take her to the vet, they think it's an allergy, so they just treat her with typical steroid shot and antibiotics. We've done that three times now. It'll go away for a week, and then come right back. My dogs like to run under our house when we let them out. Today we discovered they've torn into the fiberglass insulation. Any tips on treatment?

Fiberglass can definitely cause irritation and would explain the intermittent signs of itching and hair loss. However, I would expect the other dogs to have this too if they all get into the same area. The solution may or may not be easy for you, but it involves removing fiberglass from their environment. The likely solution is that you find a way to keep them from going places where they can have contact with the fiberglass. If they do come in contact with fiberglass, then it's important to wash them throughly with cool water for 15 minutes. If you remove the chance of them being in contact with fiberglass and Heidi is still itchy like this, then it's possible to have Heidi tested for allergies to be sure of the diagnosis. In order to diagnose specific allergies, you will likely be referred to a veterinary dermatologist. You may also consider seeking a second vet opinion. https://www.petcoach.co/article/when-is-it-time-to-seek-a-second-veterinary-opinion/ I hope that helps and Heidi gets better soon.
