Dog has red mark after hike. Is it a tick bite or insect sting?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labradoodle | Male | 10 months and 14 days old | 28 lbs

I went hiking a few times with Byron over the weekend. While doing a tick check I saw a red mark. I think this is probably a sting or bruise, but just want to check that it isn't a tick bite. He hasn't exhibited any signs of illness but we only just got back. * Reposting as apparently the photos didn't go up in the last post* Thanks a lot.

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! It appears that the pink target lesion is a black fly bite. If it is, it should fade in 3 days. It doesn't cause any pain and isn't anything to be worried about. If more areas pop up and he isn't outside then he should be seen by a Vet. https://www.vin.com/veterinarypartner/default.aspx?pid=19239&catId=102899&id=7986755 Have a great day!

I’m sorry, but it doesn’t appear that your photo was successfully attached. If you would like to try posting and attaching a photo again, it would be helpful for us to see the bump. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
