Dog has red mark after hike. Is it a tick bite or insect sting?

Pet's info: Dog | Labradoodle | Male | 10 months and 14 days old | 28 lbs

I went hiking a few times with Byron over the weekend. While doing a tick check I saw a red mark. I think this is probably a sting or bruise, but just want to check that it isn't a tick bite. He hasn't exhibited any signs of illness but we only just got back. * Reposting as apparently the photos didn't go up in the last post* Thanks a lot.

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! It appears that the pink target lesion is a black fly bite. If it is, it should fade in 3 days. It doesn't cause any pain and isn't anything to be worried about. This doesn't look like a tick bite, more likely a wasp or bee sting that Milo may have scratched. Please clean it with antibacterial soap, rinse it well, dry the area then apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it. You can also put a little bit of cortisone cream on it to prevent itching. Please use a restraint collar is needed to prevent Milo from licking it. If it gets bigger, painful or Milo becomes lethargic and not eating then I would recommend a veterinary visit. I do expect with your home care that this will heal fine. Thanks for using Boop by Petco to help you care for Milo.

My pet has been on flea and tick prevention his whole life but all of a sudden we left him with a family member when we went out of town and when we got him back he had all of these red mark on him. We thought they were tick bites but have not found
I just saw an article about something like this today. These may be fly bites. You're in the right area for black flies and these marks look similar to the ones in the article (https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/life/pets/a27755129/red-spots-on-dog-stomach/). If he is scratching excessively or seems uncomfortable, take him to see you vet, but if these are indeed black fly bites, the season is short and then they're gone.

The most common reason that we will see marks like that show up on the non-haired skin of the abdomen are because of black fly or other insect bites. They do not generally tend to be itchy, but they can be. If any of the areas are becoming swollen, enlarging or appearing to spread, then Meeko should see your veterinarian. I think my dog had a tick on him but fell off before I saw it I say this cuz I found a red ring with a,black for close to his skin on his back asi was giving him a bath
Hello, & thank you for using Boop by Petco. Just keep a close eye on the area. A little Neosporin applied to the spot twice a day would be a good idea. Not all tick bites will cause disease, so just watch over the next 10 -14 days any signs of illness in Tobi. This would include lethargy, loss of appetite, reddened eyes. Take care.

My dog had a round circle red with whit middle but it is smooth
Thank you for the picture of Chipper's lesion. It appears to be a black fly bite. These lesions from the bite look bad, but typically they do not bother the pet. You don't need to do anything to treat it, these usually go away on their own over time. That being said, if this doesn't improve over the next week, it looks worse, or he's constantly itching it, then he will need to see a vet. I hope this helps!

Poor Kato! I hope this bite is not bothering him too much. It looks like what we see with black fly bites. Whilst humans can get the 'bullseye' lesion with a tick bite that is not usually something we see with dogs. I would monitor the area for any worsening of the symptoms. You could apply a cool compress if it seems inflamed or itchy. Take Kato to see your regular veterinarian if other lesions develop or he seems to feel unwell.

Hi there, These look very similar in appearance to black fly bites, which look very dramatic but are truly benign. These are often worst in Spring and Fall seasons. If Pesci is allergic, you would see: facial swelling, full body hives, and severe vomit or diarrhea. This would be a sign he needs emergency medical care. That may be a black fly bite. If that is the case, it should not be itchy (normally), should not bother Lily and should resolve on its own without treatment. If the area is becoming swollen, enlarging or appearing to spread, then Lily should see your veterinarian. Keep the area clean and dry. You can use a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution to clean the area daily. Tick bites frequently result in a red, raised area (tick bite granuloma) after the tick drops off or is removed. The good news is that they resolve on their own within a few weeks. Resume Iggy's tick prevention and perform tick checks after being outdoors.
