Dog's surgery wound has pus, pain, and panting. Vet tonight?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered | 82 lbs

My dog had surgery to remove a retained testicle nearly 2 & half weeks ago and now a thick brown puss is coming from the wound. He is panting excessively and has a runny nose. he is still drinking and eating and going out to the toilet. I can tell he is in pain. Can this wait until morning to contact a vet or should I find somewhere to see him tonight?

If thick brown puss is coming from a wound I would recommend bringing him to a vet as soon as possible. If it ends up being nothing major at least they can provide him pain medication to help him feel better. I would want him to get some care tonight since it sounds like the incision may be infected and he may be in pain. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
