My dog cries, jumps the gate when alone. Is it separation anxiety?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 6 years old | 6.5 lbs

I'm trying to keep my dog in the kitchen while i'm gone just in case she has an accident, which she hasn't yet. But she's figured out how to jump the gate because as soon as she thinks she's alone she starts to cry and try to escape. But I've found a way to keep her behind the baby gate and now she just cries. Does she have separation anxiety? She seems to be okay if she has free range of the house while I'm gone she just sleeps on the bed or couch. I want to let her roam but afraid shell go.

Hi there. Yes, it certainly sounds like she may have separation anxiety. Many dogs with this problem are much more distressed if they're confined to a small area, so I would consider leaving her loose in the house since it sounds like she does better that way. You could also try leaving her with a special long-lasting treat that she only gets when you're gone, such as a Kong stuffed with peanut butter. A natural calming supplement like Zylkene or Composure might also be helpful.

Georgina probably does have a small degree of separation anxiety but it is good for her to learn that she can be alone without her. If she is safe and secure in the kitchen then it is fine to leave her in there, even if she is crying a little. If, however, she is continually trying to escape she may hurt herself or damage your house. If this is the case then it would probably be best to crate train her. This will keep her safer in the long run. Best of luck! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
