My dog's paws healed from hot asphalt. How can I prevent future burns?

My 8# Chiguagua mix probably walked on hot asphalt, had his paws deep pink, almost red, and was liking them for a few days; now they look 'normal' and I wonder if there's anything I could do to help.

If they are healed now I recommend getting booties at the local pet store and put them on Coco when you walk him on the hot asphalt. If they are still red I recommend a veterinarian. It looks like it is healing well so I would keep an eye on it to make sure it continues to improve. This time of year any pavement is very hot to walk on especially for tender puppy feet. If you can't leave your hand on the pavement it's too hot for his feet. Get him some booties to wear when the ground is hot so this doesn't happen again in the future.

I’m not sure if I should take him to vet or not online it says to put neosporn on it and wrap it up, keep him off his feet he went on his first official walk he’s four months and it looks like he burned the bottom of back puppy paws I just wanna know

Hello. The only way to prevent these is to use booties on Jack's paws, but if he is not licking his feet, nor does he seem uncomfortable or limps, then I do not think he needs the booties. I would be washing his feet every day, either with a dilute Povidone Iodine or Chlorhexidine solution. Wipe his feet with the solution, then dry with a soft towel without rinsing. Continue to test or avoid hot concrete or asphalt surfaces & I think Jack should do just fine. Thanks for contacting Boop by Petco.

My dogs paws are dry and cracked, probably because of the hot concrete. What are some things I can put on them that will help my dog not have cracked paws
Poor Sky! Sure to always touch the concrete to make sure it is not too hot as pets can get serious injury. Avoid walking Sky during the hot time of the day. Walk in the very early mornings or in the evenings after the temperature has dropped. Booties can help as well to protect her feet from hot temperatures. Also make sure she does not lick at the feet (have her wear an elizabethan collar at all times) and keep her on soft surfaces with no walks, running or jumping until the tissue is fully healed. You can apply a dab of coconut oil and rub it in well. Make sure she does not lick this as it can cause GI upset. You can also purchase the balm that mushers use on sled dogs. If the area does not start looking better or if it begins to look worse at any point, have her examined by the veterinarian. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

What an adorable baby. I agree that she looks really young (about a week). Her paw pads don't look blistered at this time, but it is hard to tell from a picture. If she burned her paw pads, they will start to blister and peel. If that is the case, please seek care from a veterinarian. Check her paw pads a couple of times a day to make sure they look healthy. Hopefully you got to her quickly enough that it won't be a problem. Unfortuantely, I don't think there is anything you can do at this point, but wait and see what happens. I hope that helps. I walked my dog lucky today it was around 89 degrees and when we came back from our walk I noticed he had white ash on his paws so I got a towel and rubbed it and it looked like a burn you get when you touch something a little too hot but not bleedin
Poor Lucky! Place the back of your hand on the pavement, and if you can't hold it there for five seconds, it's too hot to walk him. It does sound like he may have burned his paws on the walk, and I would limit his walking for now to allow his paws to heal. When you do walk him, do it on grassy surfaces. Keep him inside as much as possible. You might consider getting him doggie booties to protect his paws when walking. I'd leave his paws along for now, keep an eye on them. If they appear infected (red, swollen, warm to the touch), then I would take him to the vet. I hope this helps!

Hello, My dog has a minor burn that appears red that is on one of her paws in-between her toes, I have an appt to see her Vet tomorrow at 8PM, but I was wondering if there is anything I can do until then for her
Ouch! That does look sore. From the picture it does not look infected, however your veterinarian may see signs that I can’t see in a picture. The best thing you can do is to keep her mouth off of it. I know they are a nuisance but I would highly encourage you to put an E- collar (cone) on her to prevent her access to the wound. If you have any Aloe Vera that is ok as long as she has the cone on and can’t consume it. Best of luck and I hope she improves soon. Thank you for using Pet Coach.

My dog was playing with kids running around on wet concrete. I noticed at the end he didn’t want to walk anymore. I looked at him feet and it looks like the top layer of his paws are peeling off. Not bleeding. A little raw. What do I need to do?
It really depends on how severe it is. I typically recommend buying booties for Hugo but I also would recommend having your veterinarian look at him to make sure he doesn't need pain medications or antibiotics. Thank you for using Boop by Petco.

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Hammy and for providing pictures, they are very helpful. I see what you mean about his paw pads peeling. It may be too hot for him. To test if it's too hot, put the back of your hand on the track. If you can't hold it there for at least five seconds, it's too hot. It could also be he is running too hard and too often. For now, I would rest him. Allow his paw pads to heal before taking him back to running. I'd apply Musher's Secret to his paws to help then heal. The Musher's Secret, which is a pad balm, can help protect his pads as well when they heal. You can find it online. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! I'm sorry about Chaparra's paws! It is a common injury in the summer. Soaking the feet in Epsom salts twice daily and bandaging with neosporin should work. If you can't keep bandages on then just keep him on soft surfaces, like the grass. If he is painful then take him to your Vet monday for pain medications. I hope this helps!

It is difficult to say for sure what is going on with the paw pads due to the pictures being blurry but I suspect the paw pads are blistered. I would recommend resting snowball for the next 7-10 days and soaking her feet in warm epsom salt water for relief. You can add 1tbsp to 1 gallon of warm water and do this twice daily. Make sure you dry her feet very well after. If you see any signs of infection such as swelling, pus, etc. then I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at her so that the most appropriate treatment recommendations can be made.
