Why is my new kitten having litter box accidents with bloody stool?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 6 days old

Hi, my 9week old kitten Cocoa (black kitten) and his brother came to live with us 2 days ago. He can’t seem to master the litter box even though he had no problems at his foster home. He has pooped both on the floor and in his box (after we kept placing him in) he also has red blood in his stool. Should I be worried or is it just nerves and stress? His brother had 1 accident but seems to have mastered it now. We have confined the area they are playing in. Eating lots and very very playful!

This is not uncommon, most cats should adapt to both the new enviroment and food within 3-5days. I would recommend adding a probiotic such as fortiflora and consider a natural calming aid such as zylkene to help with the transition. Be aure to keep kittnes regularly dewormed also

I would recommend having a stool sample checked by your veterinarian to ensure that your kitten does not need to be dewormed again. Oftentimes kittens need to be dewormed multiple times because of the life cycle of the worms. If the diarrhea has been present for more than 2 days he may also need antibiotics and a probiotic to help get his GI tract back to normal.
