My dog's paw is swollen and he keeps licking it. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shiba Inu | Male | unneutered | 9 months and 6 days old | 28 lbs

So I brought Hachi back home from a walk and noticed he's been biting/licking his hind left paw. I putted him in his cage to let him take a nap since the walk was about 2 hours.I noticed he continued to bite his paw when I locked him in but assumed he would stop after a while but I was wrong. When I let him out of his cage I went to check on his paw and noticed it was swollen. He must had continued nipping on his paws when I locked him in.Will he be okay or should I take him to the vet tomorrow?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Hachi. If his paw is still bothering him today, I would recommend that he is seen. He could have sustained an insect bite or sting or stepped on something sharp. He could have a piece of something trapped under his skin. Either scenario would be irritating to him. The longer he goes on licking the paw, the more likely it will be to get infected. I hope this information helps!
