What are these pimples on my puppy's belly? Vet or special shampoo?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 16 lbs

We found a puppy who is about 8 weeks old on the side of the road and decided to take her in. She seems to be part pit/ boxer/ lab. She has developed pimple looking like pustules on her belly. Can these just be fixed with special shampoo or should we take her into the vet?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Tilly. She appears to have a superficial infection on her skin known as impetigo. It is common in puppies. Being so young and new to you, she will need to see a veterinarian to start her vaccines and deworming. However, you can start by bathing her with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as an oatmeal or fatty acid based formula. You can bathe her twice per week. If this does not help, she will likely be prescribed a medicated shampoo. I hope this information helps!
