My dog has bloody stool, mucus, and drools. Is it medication side effects?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed | 8 years and 7 months old | 14.33 lbs

Her wet stool has mucus and blood. She has been taking some medication including, iron supplements, antibiotics, vitamin c and pills for her kidney. She's anemic who's recently had a total of 3 seizures which has stopped. Today I've seen her drool more than she's ever drooled before with saliva falling down in spurts. Her stool was soft and black the other day and I wonder why it has suddenly turned to what it is now. Should I be concerned? Or is it due to what she is currently going through?

Hello, sorry to hear about Muffy. It sounds like she is suffering from side effects of the medications that she is on. However, she can also be having a small GI bleed/ulcer from her kidney disease. I would recommend that Muffy is re-evaluated by her veterinarian to make sure that she does not signs of a GI ulcer or bleeding. She may need additional medications to protect her GI tract and to reduce her diarrhea. Hope this helps and best of luck.
