Cat licking same spot for years: Is it stress? What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 11 years and 9 months old | 15 lbs

Cat licks same area on belly and leg for 5 yrs. Been on Atopica but continues. Grain free food, continues. Tea tree oil on the area, continues. All other behavior is normal, very active, clear eyes, great fur, no issues with toileting, eating or drinking. Started pattern licking after his 2 siblings passed away 2013.

This is likely caused by stress. Have you tried Feliway diffusers? They will work in many cases,, You will need to put them into the areas where your cat spends most of her time and do this for at least three months. This is not caused by allergies, which is why all the medications and treatments you mention did not work. Please do not ever use tea tree oil on your cat again as it is toxic to cats. The metabolites of tea tree oil cannot be broken down by cats, You can get Feliway in Petshops, on the Internet or at your vet's.
