My senior dog has a cancerous lump. Should I trust vet's no-surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shar Pei | Female | spayed | 38 lbs

My 13 yr old Shar-Pei has a good sized lump in her neck. I took her to my vet today and she examined her. The lump is solid and is under her tongue as well. Most likely cancer. My vet recommends just watching it and not doing surgery. What are your thoughts?

At the age of 13 surgery in this location may actually not prolong your dog's life, but actually cause him more suffering, as, in order to remove this fairly large tumor, parts of the tongue and neck tissue may need to be removed. This will take a while to heal, be painful and will interfere with eating. I think you can trust your vet with the assessment. If you would like a second opinion, consult with a veterinary oncologist. I am sure your vet can refer you to one and will not mind.
