Why is my dog suddenly anxious, shaking, and won't get in the car?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 25 lbs

My Sister's dog, Murphy has been acting different. He used to love to go for rides but now he won't even get in the car. My Sister's other dog has no problems. We tried picking him up & put him in the car but he started panting & shaking. If anybody leaves the house and doesn't say "I'll be back" he starts heaving like he is crying. My Sister's husband passed away in January at home, he had a heart attack. My Sister sold her old furniture and got new because she sold her house & is moving.

I'm so sorry that your sister lost her husband. I'm not sure whether Murphy's issues are related to the loss of his "father", however he certainly sounds quite anxious for some reason. I'd recommend Murphy see his vet to discuss the issue. A dedicated trainer may be able to help your sister overcome these problems, but it is going to take some patience. In the meantime, her vet can prescribe some medications to relieve Murphy's anxiety until he can be re-trained.
