My senior dog struggles to move and gets dizzy. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 15 years old | 35 lbs

My senior dog (15 year old German Shepherd) has a lot of difficulty moving and getting around. I often have to pick her up because she can’t get up and she seems to get dizzy often. She belongs to my parents so there’s not a whole lot of decisions I can make. My dad says it’s just old age but I worry about her. What should I do?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lucy. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian. Her signs are likely the result of her advanced age. However, they are pain medications that make her feel better. She likely has some degree of arthritis effecting her mobility. If some pain medication could increase her quality of life, I think that would be wonderful. In the meantime, be sure not to give any over-the-counter pain medication as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!
