Is my dog's cough, lump, or pain normal after tooth extraction?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | 5 years and 8 months old | 18 lbs

Hello! Maxie got her tooth removed. Only one of her upper morals and I was wondering is it normal for them to be coughing? Also she got her abscess drained too during surgery and I was wondering if the lump will go down during healing? Is it normal for her to still be in pain?

the lump will go down and heal completely as well, this can take a little longer than a week. pain is also common after such a surgery but she should be on pain killers from your vet for at least 3 days.

It is normal for a dog to be coughing several days after a surgery, this happens because a tube is inserted to the wind pipe during anesthesia and the tube often causes irritation of the trachea, which is the cause of the cough.
