My dog with Parvo is drinking water after IV. Is it a sign of recovery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Female | unspayed | 30 lbs

My huskey was recently diagnosed with the Parvo virus. I’ve dealt with this before with other dogs. They don’t drink or eat. They have given me Electrolytes to give her via IV drip. It’s been about 6 hours now since I gave her 500 ml and she walked over to her dog bowl and is drinking water on her own. Is that a good sign? Or does it just mean she’s dehydrated

It's definitely a good sign that she is drinking water. Even if they get adequate amounts of fluids IV, they can still feel parched and want to drink occasionally. This does not indicate that she is dehydrated and is good that she's helping to keep hydrated. The IV fluids, or other methods of hydration should still be given as directed by your vet though. To asses hydration, I recommend you read the article at the link below. https://www.petcoach.co/article/assessing-dehydration-through-skin-elasticity-in-dogs-cats/ I hope that helps and Ripley gets better soon.
