How much food should my 7-month-old puppy eat daily, including treats?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Cocker Spaniel | Female | spayed | 7 months and 9 days old | 13 lbs

How much puppy food should Sophie be eating a day? I have started feeding her 2 cups 1 time a day and she eats it all pretty quick.(Purina one) She gets biscuit treats and fresh apple, frozen sugar snap peas, also. Am I feeding her enough? She is now 14 1/2 pounds, At 7 months, ribs are palpable, not prominent, waist very noticable. And very "gauky" puppy frame.

How much you should feed depends on the food you are feeding. You should be feeding a complete puppy food for medium sized dogs. Look at the feed bag and it will tell you the amount to feed. Realize that snap peas, cookies, treats, etc are also calories. As you describe, ribs should be easily palpable, but not showing and she should have a prominent waist. It sounds as if she is near or at her ideal weight for her age. Rather than feeding her once daily I would split up her daily ration into two feeds, morning and evening.
