Why does my Maltese have brown flakes on her back, not brushing out?

Question

My 6 year old Maltese has what Iooks like brown dandruff on her back. She is washed regularly, and fed well. On bathing her today I notices this complaint. A lot washed away but some remained. Using a good dog shampoo and rinsing well. Does not bother her at all. Does not come out with brushing. Any help would be appreciated. Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | 6 years and 11 months old

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is hard to say what this may be- the picture is a little hard to make out. A few possibilities may be just skin pigmentation variation, comedones (black heads), or perhaps evidence of a fungal infection or bacterial infection. I would recommend Sophie see her veterinarian for an exam so Sophie's skin can get a closer inspection. I hope this helps and thanks again for posting!
