I have ringworm. Can my guinea pig get it even if I washed my hands?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Guinea Pig | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 9 days old

I have ringworm and before I went to spot clean my Guinea pigs cage I washed my hands under hot water with soap. When spot cleaning he went up to and under my hand causing my hand to rub on him. Is he at risk now or is he fine because I washed my hands? The ringworm rash is beside my neck and I have not touched the rash at all.

Ringworm is highly contagious to Guinea Pigs and seems to be able to spread easily with minimal contact, but strict hygiene is effective for preventing transmission. Considering that Sebastian did not have direct contact with the ringworm lesion, and you recently washed your hands, the risk of spreading this to him is very low. For more information about preventing the spread of ringworm, I recommend click on the link below. https://www.cdc.gov/healthypets/diseases/ringworm.html I hope that helps and all is well with you and Sebastian.
