My cat has a broken leg. Can it survive a week until treatment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 4 years and 10 months old | 6 lbs

My cat has a possible broken leg. He was attacked by a dog ton 5/21 through our window. The owner of the dog is not helping pay. We took him to the vet and got him antibiotics and pain med. It will be another week until we have the money for additional treatment. Will he survive another week? He has started back eating, drinking, and using his litter box. He even gave me some kisses. They said we can euthanize him but we really don't want to. He can only stand on 3 legs. The other just dangles.

Hello sorry to hear about Casper. It definitely sounds like Casper will survive especially since he is starting to be more like his normal self. You need to keep him rested without any running, jumping, or rough housing as this can exacerbate his injury. Continue his medications and wait until you can obtain his x-ray to confirm he doesn't have a fracture. Monitor the leg for any swelling, discharge, worsening pain, fever, a decreased appetite, diarrhea, or vomiting. If you note any of these then please have Casper evaluated by a veterinarian. Hope this helps and best of luck.
