Why does my dog's front leg limp intermittently, but not when running?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 4 months old | 40 lbs

my dog is lame in her front right leg and has been for about 1 1/2 months but the limping gets better intermittently and then worsens. she doesn't seem to be in pain. at one point during this her back left leg was lame but that only last a few days and hasn't given her issue since. if she gets up to a full speed run she doesn't limp at all. she is 1 yr 5 mo old 45 lb retriever mix

Poor Tuna! She most likely has just injured a tendon or ligament which is way it is intermittent. She could also have a mild case of dysplasia. I would start her on a regular dose of joint supplements like dasuquin or flexadin. I would also have your vet take a look at her to ensure there isn't anything else more serious going on like a small fracture or infection somewhere. I would also strictly confine her except for short leash walks to go to the bathroom for 14 days. Your vet will be able to do x-rays if needed and start her on some anti-inflammatories to help her heal. I hope this helps!
