Dog tail amputation: Are visible stitches normal during healing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 11 lbs

Hello, My dog had to have her tail partially amputated on April 25 and I’m wondering what The site should look like at this point? The stitches were supposed to dissolve but I can still see them (not as much)

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. The tail tip looks as though it healed well. Sometimes the stitches do become visible and unravel from the incision as it heals. These stitches can be removed at this point in time. I would bring Abbey back to the veterinarian and have the stitches removed. Abbey can be awake for this and it should only take a few minutes to do this. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
