My new puppy won't eat, vomits, has diarrhea. Is he seriously ill?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 23 days old | 7 lbs

My new puppy won't eat anything and hasn't eaten in two days. He has vomitted and has diarrhea, and will only drink water. He's been laying down all day and only gets up to go to the bathroom. Should I be worried? or is this him getting used to his new life and being nervous still

Unfortunately, this is not normal behavior for a young puppy and is pretty concerning. At less than two months old, your puppy needs to eat regularly or he risks having low blood sugar, which can cause serious health problems. Vomiting is not typically caused by stress and all these signs make me worry about a more serious illness. Please have him seen by a veterinarian right away because his lack of appetite and vomiting are very serious.

A change in appetite and attitude can be from stress if a new addition but the vomiting should not be. Since it has been going on for a few days now I would have your vet check to see what is causing it and to make sure it isn't something your new puppy can catch.

Honestly it could be either. I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Feed Prada a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If she refuses to eat the bland diet, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away
