My dog stays inside. Is heartworm prevention still necessary?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 5 months old | 7 lbs

I have 2 Chihuahuas that are 2 yro. Each has had their first year of all vaccinations but not heartworm meds. They do not go outside to walk around where other dogs have been ever!! I have a patio

Heart worms are transmitted by mosquitoes. Since it is impossible to keep mosquitoes out of the house, your dogs can be infected even if they never go outside. So this is why it is important to do heart worm prevention. Your dogs will need to have heart worm tests done before they can get prescription heart worm medication.
