What are the risks if my dog is exposed to crack cocaine at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 5 years and 2 months old

I am pet sitting a dog for a coworker while he spends 90 days in jail. It has come to my attention that he smokes crack cocaine at home. I'm curious what dangers this dog is subject to, and If I should allow her to go back into that environment when he is released from jail. I'm very concerned what the effects or risks are for an animal in that environment, but cannot find much information online. I appreciate your time

Wow, this is a tough situation! Crack cocaine is the more potent form of cocaine, and it is toxic to dogs. Dee Dee could accidentally come into contact with it by sniffing a table or a towel that has cocaine on it. I suppose there is always the possibility that she could be deliberately exposed to it by her owner. In dogs, it affects the brain and heart, and exposure to it can be deadly. It is not a safe environment for a dog to be exposed to; in addition, in environments where illegal drugs are used, there can be other problems such as abuse. Now I'm not saying this is the case here, but it could be a possibility. I agree this isn't a safe or healthy environment for her to be in, and it's not something she should be exposed to for her health and wellbeing. I would be in contact with the local SPCA to discuss the situation with them, and they can advise you on the legal measures that can be taken to protect her. I would give them a call this week to discuss things. I hope this helps, and it's lovely of you to look after her and care so deeply about her wellbeing!
