Will mixing Meow Mix and Fancy Feast cause cat UTI or kidney issues?

Hi. Since Meow Mix dry cat food haven't been recalled yet, is it fine to feed my cat only 1 can of Fancy Feast and half cup of Meow Mix dry food? Will my cat can have UTI or kidney failure on that?

Meow Mix is fine to feed Oliver, and it shouldn't cause a UTI or kidney failure. I'm not sure why you would think that would happen with this brand. Given that you are putting a wet food in with the dry, the extra moisture will help with his urinary healthy. I do caution against mixing two different brands together, as that can cause GI upset. You can give him Fancy Feast canned and dry food together to prevent that from happening. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! The fancy feast and Meow mix are find to feed at that amount. I prefer Purina kitten chow or a Science Diet kitten formula. Fancy feast and meow mix are not prescription foods so they do not prevent kidney disease, urinary crystals that would cause him to be blocked (urinary obstruction) or a bacterial UTI. UTI's and kidney failure are not caused by diet. UTI's are from bacteria and kidney disease develops with age and many other factors. Oliver is too young to put him on a kidney diet since it isn't safe for growing kittens and we only put cats on kidney diets when they start showing signs of kidney disease. Urinary obstructions can be caused by diet and by genetics (how the cats processes the food) and causes the formation of crystals in the urine. Urinary obstructions aren't always caused by diet as stress, inflammation, mucous and bladder stones can be causes. I hope this helps and I wish you and Oliver the very best!

As long as a diet is AAFCO approved then it meets the nutritional needs for your cat. A diet is not the cause of kidney disease unless it contains toxic compounds, which Fancy Feast would not. If you are worried about preventing kidney disease then I would recommend feeding your cat a high moisture diet of canned wet food and reducing the amount of dry intake. Ensure that Alley drinks enough water and have bloodwork analyzed yearly.

I know of 3 excellent kidney-specific diets for cats - Hill's k/d, Royal Canin's Renal LP, and Purina's NF. I'm sure as your vet explained, kidney diets are designed to be low in phosphorus and protein, and they produce less nitrogenous waste (less work for the kidneys). Wet food is preferred when managing kidney disease, mainly because it adds additional moisture to the diet, and kidney failure tends to cause animals to "leech" fluids from the body, so the additional water is necessary. Having said that, cats can be very difficult when it comes to changing diets, so if she absolutely won't eat wet food, I would try the dry variety of any of the foods I recommended above. Most veterinary internal medicine specialists feel that getting a kidney failure cat to eat is more important than specifically what it eats, so if you absolutely can't get her to eat a kidney diet, you may have to resort (at least temporarily, while you transition her) to feeding her what she will eat. I wouldn't go so far as to say that is causes kidney failure but it is equivalent to us eating Taco Bell every day. So I would focus on making the necessary changes now that you know there are better foods out there. I would recommend Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Natural balance or Innova.

So it’s ok to mix your food but it’s not likely that the cats are getting any real benefits from any of the diets. The diets are formulated to be fed as the whole meal every time. The diets also contain only a certain amount of the active ingredients that are unique to the formula of the diet and if the pet does not eat the full amount, the total level ends up being below threshold and the pet receives no benefit from the active ingredients. A better option would be to pick one diet and stick with it. That way the pets will receive the full benefit from the diet depending on what is your greatest concern. Supplements can be added if you’re worried about hairballs or joint health. The urinary components are unique and you are not likely find any supplements for urinary health. My cat had a uniary block. I'm feeding both cats the uniary food now. It doesn't fill them up, I go through it 2ce as fast and it's filled with gluten corn meal and fillers. I was feeding them the best possible food I could before hand and avoided
I am sorry to hear about Kitten! I would not recommend mixing the other food with the urinary food for the affected cat, because it will make the diet less effective. You don't mention if the food you are now feeding is a prescription diet food or an over the counter food. Your vet may have a recommendation for you if you are not satisfied with the current diet, as there are several different urinary diets available for cats. I would not be concerned with a small amount of corn or gluten in the food. The concern with gluten in pet foods is a big marketing strategy right now with pet food companies and we are less concerned with these ingredients than the marketing would make you believe. Another option is a specially formuated homemade diet. You can work with https://secure.balanceit.com/ and your vet to determine if there is an appropriate homemade diet for your kitty. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! if Lucky is on a prescription urinary diet for bladder stones, to prevent a urinary obstruction or to prevent urinary crystals it is not recommended to mix the food with anything else as it virtually makes it in effective. I would discuss other brands that may be more affordable with your Vet. Purina, Hills and Royal canin all make urinary foods. If you absolutely can not afford it then I would have him on an all canned food over the counter urinary diet and add extra water to the canned food. This will cause his urine to be more dilute. My cat is required to eat urinary tract control food. Is it okay to feed him regular canned cat food as long as I add water to it?
Regular food is much less effective in preventing recurrent urinary tract issues in cats which are very prone to repeat episodes - it is impossible to say how sensitive he is and without trying you will not know but there is a chance he could relapse on ordinary canned food. Urinary diets tend to be adjusted to maintain urine pH to prevent crystals and are restricted in minerals and use only high quality protein sources to minimise the risk of urinary tract issues as well as providing an important source of fluids compared to dry food. The very best option in affected cats is urinary canned food but in many cases a high quality, commercial canned food is sufficient - if he relapses on this you will have to source the urinary prescription food as a treatment and prevention

If they both drink a lot of water, then you can feed them dry food and mix in wet food occasionally as well as give it with treats. I only feed my cats dry food, and they are fine. I hope this helps!

Can I Change to Non-Prescription Cat Food for Urinary Problems?
Moisture content or water intake is more important than brand, although you do want to stay away from discount or store brands. Choose a quality canned food since they are 75% or more moisture. If your cat eats dry, soak it in water before feeding. A grain-free diet is best since cats don't "need" carbohydrates. You can also feed a raw diet. There are several commercial diets available. Again, add water if necessary. Always monitor your cat for straining to urinate or bloody urine though and see a vet promptly if you notice either.
