Dog drooling in car after hike: Is it car sickness or thirst?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rottweiler | Female | unspayed | 5 months and 17 days old | 53 lbs

The last 3 days, when I drive home from hiking with JuJu in my Jeep, she has long pieces of drool hanging from both sides of her mouth. It is clear drool. I don't think it's car sickness, because I have not seen it before. Is this from thirst? I give her water at the end of our hike.

Dogs start to drool when they get nauseous, so it would be my first idea. This does not always mean that your dog will vomit. Observe JuJu and if the drooling only occurs in the car while driving, the it is definitely caused by nausea. You carry giving your dog some ginger capsules before driving, which helps lessen the nausea.
