Why is my dog's pee red after eating beets? Should I worry?

My dog gets red color urine after eating beetroot. Is it fine?

This can be normal. The color is caused by the excretion of betacyanin that is in the beets, but it should not cause medical problems. The red color of the urine should resolve in 12-24 hours after ingestion of the beetroot, but if it does not, then that isn't normal and something else could be causing the color of Scooby's urine such as a UTI or bladder stones. In that case, he would need to see a vet. Good luck, I hope this helps!

    Beets can change the color of urine so this is likely the source of the color change. To be certain I would stop feeding beets and observe for a few days. If the color doesn't resolve or she has increased urination or pain on urinating a vet visit is needed.

Hello, sorry to hear about Delilah. It unusual for the veggies and blueberries to make her urine darker. Given that female dogs are more likely to UTIs, I would recommend having her checked for this to make sure she doesn't need antibiotics. Alternatively, you can continue to monitor her if she otherwise seems like her normal self, and if she has further episodes of dark colored urine, then have her seen by your veterinarian. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Brown or red color urine is not expected from any of the commonly used chemotherapeutics in dogs. Dogs with prostatic tumors can develop secondary infections and sometimes actually have bleeding episodes. I recommend that you discuss with your oncologist submitting his urine for a urinalysis/urine culture to rule out a urinary tract infection, especially if that matches the rest of his clinical signs of present. With that much blood I would get him checked by your vet. They will get a sample of the urine and see if there are bacteria and any cells or crystals to determine if an X-ray is needed to check for stones. Make sure he can urinate and drinks well until you get him seen

My pet dog is found to urinate in reddish yellow colour. She is in mensus period now. Is this reddish yellow urination is common with this period? or an any sign of urinary infection?
Reddish urination during this period of time can definitely occur. However, this is not to say that it isn't coincidental and a separate urinary issue is not occurring. As long as July isn't experiencing any other clinical signs such as frequent small amounts of urination, straining to urinate, pain when urination, or urinating extremely large amounts, I wouldn't necessarily assume anything is wrong currently. If you have a working relationship with your veterinarian, he might be open to you collecting a urine sample in a container and dropping it off at their office for analysis. They will be able to tell you if there are large numbers of white blood cells and/or bacteria present, and potentially prescribe an antibiotic should they see fit. Hope this makes sense.

Hello my bitch has blood in her urine, its bright red
Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. Blood in the urine can be indicative of a urinary tract infection, stones within the bladder or urethra, or even cancer of the bladder. I recommend having Bluebell seen by your veterinarian as soon as they have an appointment available. Your veterinarian can perform a urinalysis to see if an infection is present, and may recommend x-rays to check for evidence of stones in the bladder. I hope this is helpful!

My 11yr old beagle has very dark red urine and has some frequent clotting in her urine too. She pees very frequently. What could this be?
I am sorry to hear that your dog is experiencing this. Urinary tract infections would be the most common cause of dark red urine, but urinary bladder stones are also common and are more likely to lead to clots as well. Even less common but still a possibility would be urinary tract cancer. I would highly encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. A urinalysis and x-ray will likely be recommended. If needed an ultrasound is sometimes recommended as well. Best of luck and I hope she improves soon. Thank you for using Pet Coach.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Cheezy. The color of a dog's urine will vary with their hydration status. So the less water she has consumed, the darker yellow her urine will be. This could be normal for her assuming she is not straining to urinate, going more frequently or having accidents in the house. These could be signs of another problem such as a urinary tract infection. If you are concerned, I would have her veterinarian perform a urinalysis to rule out any other disease. If Bentley is feeling better otherwise then it is ok to monitor him. If he has softer stool then a veterinary check up is warranted or he is vomiting/lethargic or not eating. I get concerned with blood in stool when it is consistent or a lot of blood. I would drop a stool sample off at your veterinarian to check for intestinal parasites. Hello. What you are seeing are porphyrin pigments in the urine. This is perfectly normal & may come & go. Make sure his pelleted diet is fresh & appropriate for rabbits. Rabbits absolutely need hay & grasses to live well & should be available to Snow all day long. You can feed other green leafy plants such as broccoli, cabbage, chard, parsley, celery leaves, watercress, kale, endive & carrot & beet tops. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.
