Why is my dog's back foot twitching, painful, and chewing on it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 3 months old | 54 lbs

My dog's back foot has begun "twitching". He began by moving slower, putting less weight on the limb, and now he sometimes gnaws on the foot. This decline has occurred during the course of a few hours, and after a playful morning. I am not aware of any traumatic injury to his leg, and he looked normal while playing. He dislikes any touch on the foot and struggles to get comfortable. There are no gross deformities or inflammation that could show on camera. Thoughts? Thank you in advance!

What you are describing makes me think that Reggie’s problem is related to the nerves in his foot/leg. This would explain the twitching and sometimes if there is pain from the nerves dogs will bite/chew on the area. I would recommend taking Reggie to a vet to be examined. He may have an orthopedic or neurological issue causing pain/discomfort and your vet may be able to prescribe some medication to help him be more comfortable. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
