My dog ate Equal sweetener. Should I worry about xylitol toxicity?

My 20 lb dog may have eaten some equal sweetener. Is she in danger?

In looking up the ingredients of Equal, I see that it is made with dextrose and aspartame among other things. There is not xylitol, which is what is toxic to dogs. Check the ingredients of your packet to be sure, but as long as there is no xylitol in it, Goldie should be fine! If there is xylitol in the ingredients, then yes she would be in danger of xylitol toxicity and she should a vet immediately. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Check the ingredients. Xylitol is found in some sugar free gums and it is highly toxic to dogs. If Xylitol is present, have her examined quickly to start treatment asap. If Xylitol is not present, the gum should not cause a problem. I hope this helps.

Luckily none of these ingredients are toxic. Xylitol is the only artificial sugar that causes toxicity. Ingesting a large amount of an artificial sugar could cause some stomach upset but I doubt you will see any symptoms if a small amount was ingested.

Hi there. Yes, if the mint contained xylitol, this is very concerning as it only takes a very small amount to be toxic - especially in a small dog. I would recommend looking up the brand name of the mint online to check the ingredient list. If xylitol is listed as an ingredient, you need to take her to the vet immediately for treatment.

If the Brach's contained xylitol, it would say it on the label. Since the ingredients say sugar, it won't contain xylitol, so they won't get poisoning from this. I would be concerned they may have some stomach upset, such as vomiting or diarrhea. If you see that, a loss of appetite, or lethargy, have them seen by a vet. I hope this helps!

I can understand being worried. Xylitol is highly toxic to dogs. The xylitol itself would be in the chocolate and if the wrapper was empty, then she wouldn’t have ingested any xylitol. She will likely be fine. If she was to get sick, you’d see signs of toxicity within 15-30 minutes of ingestion.

My 9 week old lab puppy got ahold of a hard candy and swallowed it whole. Do I need to be concerned? Or can she digest it?
It is likely this hard candy will be broken down in her stomach by the stomach acid, but the sugar from it may give her a tummy ache. I would check the ingredients of the hard candy to make sure there is no xylitol in it. That's because xylitol is highly toxic to dogs, and if it does have that ingredient, she will need to see a vet immediately. Xylitol ingestion can be fatal. Otherwise, she should be fine aside from the chance of GI upset in the form of vomiting and/or diarrhea. Should you see that, withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet.

Thank you for your question. Based on experience at the ASPCA APCC (animal poison control center), dogs ingesting > 0.1 g/kg of xylitol should be considered at risk for developing hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), while doses of > 0.5 g/kg may be hepatotoxic (damaging to the liver). This would be equal to 100 mg/kg. If a 20 lb (9kg) dog ate .004mg of xylitol, this would be a dose of 0.0004 mg per kg so not toxic.

My dog ate trident gum 1 hour ago. She is 38 lbs
Many types of Trident gum contain xylitol. This artificial sweetener is extremely toxic to dogs because it very quickly causes hypoglycemia (low blood glucose) and liver damage. At this point, you should take Gidget to an emergency veterinarian immediately. They may or may not induce vomiting since it's been over an hour since she ingested the gum. They will also be able to closely monitor her blood glucose and liver values, while administering supportive IV fluids and medications. There are no home remedies for this situation - this is a life-threatening emergency if the gum contained xylitol. I really hope that everything goes well for Gidget!

Oh no, that wasn't good that Kujo ate gum! Thank you for providing the ingredients information for the gum, that was extremely helpful. The good news is that maltitol and sorbital are not toxic to dogs. Because it does not contain xylitol, she should be fine. You may see some stomach upset from eating the gum in the form of vomiting and diarrhea, and I will give you a home remedy to give to her if you see this. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. I hope this helps :-)
