My senior dog won't eat after a fall and bruising. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 16 years and 7 months old | 3.7 lbs

I cant get my dog to eat she had a big fall. Our VET said she has no broken bones or any brain damage but lots of soft tissue bruising. He gave us anti inflammatory/pain relief. She is 16yrs old and a 3.7lb chihuahua, she fell "tumbled endover end a flight of stairs" 48 hrs ago. I have syringed only a couple of ounces of bone broth every 2-3hrs, orally of course. She just wont eat. I paid for an answer 45 min ago. I just need help getting her to eat.

If she’s in pain she may not want to eat. I’ve found doing some gentle massage and heat to the neck and back can often get them to relax and feel better so they may eat something. Most dogs love wet cat food so I’ll often try that, placing a small amount into her mouth or on her nose so she licks it off. If needed I would take her back for a recheck and they can give her fluids so she doesn’t get dehydrated. Hopefully as she gets better from the bruising her appetite will return. Please keep up with the broth too. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for T.T.
