My dog only potties once daily and won't go on leash. Is this healthy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 4 years and 10 months old | 60.2 lbs

We just adopted our dog about a month ago and she's 5. We walk her multiple times a day but she only goes to the bathroom once, at night once we are asleep. She refuses to go outside on a leash. What should we do?I know it's unhealthy for a big dog to potty and poop only 1 time a day. She's a boxer/ plott hound mix

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Defecating once a day is actually not considered unhealthy. It all depends on what she eats. For example, it may be that she is eating a diet that is high in protein and low in fiber for instance. This could be easily fixed by feeding her a diet that is higher in fiber. Based on what she eats at this time, defecating just once daily may be just fine. Good luck and have a great day!
