My cats are picky. Why do they only eat dry food and refuse wet?

my three cats only want to eat dry food. I have tried every kind of moist food. they snub their nose at the food. they use to like purina medley but like barley finish . I am trying royal canin small cuts they are eating a little. Thank You ,Constance

Your cats are adorable! It's actually fine to feed cats only dry food, that's all I feed my own cats. The important thing is to make sure they get enough water, so I recommend a pet water fountain. It provides a constant source of fresh, aerated water which encourages them to drink. I have one for my cats and they love it. You can get a pet water fountain online or at a pet store. Keep feeding them the dry food if that's what they want to eat. I hope this helps Constance!

Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco. Some cats have very definite preferences for how their food is prepared. Do not worry that Salem just does not like the moist food. I assume you are concerned about water intake, but as long as their is always fresh water available, she will get what she needs. Some cats really enjoy moving water, & this is an option to increase fluid intake. You can either let a faucet drip for a time, or purchase a pet water fountain. But keep feeding the Science Diet. This is an excellent choice for Salem. Take care.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Some cats are carbohydrate junkies and just prefer dry over canned food. It is fine for them to eat just dry. But if you want to convert them to canned food then you have to do so gradually. There are benefits to canned food, like more moisture content. If you leave dry food down all the time it is best to do scheduled feedings. So start feeding the dry food to 3-4 meals per day and only leave it down for 20 mins. Make sure you make it known to your cats it is mealtime so they know to eat. Once they have all accepted the new mealtime and eat well then start offering canned food instead of dry. Some may gobble it up right away, others may turn their nose up. Try warming it up. Don't leave it out for more than 20 mins because the flavor changes as it drys out and never serve it cold from the fridge. You can sprinkle a little dry on top of the wet or mix it in, if that works then gradually decrease the amount of dry you use over time. Just be awar

Your cats are so cute! Given that one of your cats vomits on wet food but not dry, it's a good idea to put them on dry food only. If you want them only on dry food, slowly decrease the amount of wet food you give them until they have the dry food only. To switch brands of dry food, start mixing the new and old food together starting with a 75/25 mix of old food and new food. After about a week, increase the amount of new food and decrease the amount of old food. Continue doing this until they are eating the dry food only. Brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. Purina is a good supermarket brand. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

I’ve had my kitten for almost 10 months now and I have failed to find a dry food that brings her to want to eat. She will eat only a few bites and then cover it up. I’ve tried many different brands and i am aferaid that she isn’t getting enough food.
Some cats are just very picky. As long as she's an ok weight (which your vet can tell you), it's fine if she's only on wet food. Dry food is generally more of a high carb food for cats anyways, so her weight may be easier to control on an all or mostly wet diet.

If they both drink a lot of water, then you can feed them dry food and mix in wet food occasionally as well as give it with treats. I only feed my cats dry food, and they are fine. I hope this helps!

If both of your cats are 6 months old it may be that they simply don’t need as many calories and are eating less dry food for that reason. It’s pretty rare for cats to be too thin but you could check with your vet to make sure their body condition is good if you’re concerned about underfeeding. If you don’t want them to eat as much wet food then offer less. If they are maintaining their weight and are not vomiting or having diarrhea I wouldn’t be concerned that they’re eating a little less food.

Hi Anita, Misty looks like she's a good body condition now. Some cats just don't like wet food. It would be fine to feed her only dry food, but I would advise getting her a pet fountain to help make sure she drinks enough water. Cats love running water and pet fountains can really help. It is ideal for a cat to have plenty of moisture in their diet, but as long as they are drinking enough water, they can be fine on just a dry food diet. I feed my cats only dry food, and they have a water fountain which encourages them to drink plenty of water, and I don't have any issues with their health. The same goes for dogs, as long as they are drinking plenty of water, dry kibble is fine. The concern about adding more moisture in the diet is when there are urinary problems. Then wet food should be fed.

It is completely fine to feed you cat only dry food if that is all she likes. If you want to give her canned food as an occasional treat any brand should be fine. Hello, Cats can be very finicky eaters. Most truly healthy cats with no dental disease will not starve themselves of kibble if left with only that option. However, cats can seriously damage their liver if they go too long without eating, and some cats are both very finicky and very strong willed.
